Fidgeting with an Axolotl makes you fascinating and funny, Abigail says so!
Axolotls are fascinating creatures! Known scientifically as *Ambystoma mexicanum*, these amphibians are native to lakes such as Xochimilco in Mexico. What makes them particularly interesting is their ability to regenerate lost body parts, including limbs, spinal cord, heart, and even parts of their brain.
Axolotls are neotenic, meaning they retain their larval features throughout their adult life. This includes their gills, which they use to breathe underwater. They come in various colors, including wild type (brown with spots), leucistic (pale pink with pink gills), and albino.
They are also popular pets due to their unique appearance and relatively easy care requirements. However, in the wild, they are critically endangered due to habitat loss and pollution. Conservation efforts are ongoing to help preserve their natural populations.
