Scientific name: Carcharodon carcharias
Size: Usually 11–16 feet long, but some reach over 20 feet.
Weight: Around 1,500–4,000 pounds.
Lifespan: Up to 70 years.
Habitat: Found in temperate and coastal waters worldwide — hotspots include South Africa, California, and Australia.
Traits & Abilities:
Keen senses: They can detect a drop of blood in millions of gallons of water and sense the electric fields from prey’s muscle movements.
Top predator: They feed on seals, sea lions, fish, and sometimes even smaller sharks.
Breaching hunters: In places like South Africa, they launch themselves completely out of the water to catch seals — a rare behavior in sharks.
Solitary but curious: Usually alone but sometimes observed in loose social groups with a sort of pecking order.
Warm-blooded (sort of): They can regulate their body temperature to be warmer than the surrounding water, giving them bursts of speed.
Fun/Scary Bit:
Great whites don’t actually like eating humans — most bites are “sample” bites when they mistake us for seals. Unfortunately, that sample is enough to ruin your whole day.
