Manatees, often called "sea cows," are gentle, slow-moving marine mammals primarily found in warm, shallow coastal waters and rivers, especially around Florida, the Caribbean, and parts of Central and South America. There are three main species: the West Indian, Amazonian, and African manatees.

These lovable creatures are herbivores, munching on seagrass, algae, and other aquatic plants for up to eight hours a day! Manatees can grow up to 13 feet long and weigh as much as 1,300 pounds, yet despite their size, they have a friendly nature and often swim near humans.

One of their unique traits is needing to surface every few minutes to breathe, as they’re mammals. They face threats like boat collisions, habitat loss, and climate change, which impact their numbers, making conservation efforts crucial to their survival.
